What is Telecommuting?
Stacey Shainline, Human Resources Administrator

Results from last year’s employee opinion survey indicated that there are questions regarding Telecommuting.  The following answers some frequently asked questions surrounding the topic.

What is Telecommuting?

Telecommuting is the partial or total substitution of telecommunications technology for the trip to and from the primary workplace Simply put, it's moving the work to the workers, instead of the workers to work.

Computers, cellular phones, fax, and advanced communications links and dial-up access have removed the physical barriers that once required workers to be in their offices.

Working at home is the most popular form of telecommuting. The employee designates workspace at home to conduct business functions.

Why Telecommuting?

The benefits of telecommuting are many. The employee advantages are reduced commuting time and costs, and a potentially enhanced quality of life. The advantages to Ezenet are increased employee satisfaction and productivity, and reduced office space cost.

Who Should Telecommute.

Telecommuting is not for all employees, either due to the nature of their job responsibilities, or due to their current personal capabilities, or due to their home environment. Telecommuting is a voluntary condition of employment. The decision to allow a particular employee to telecommute should be a made by management in consultation with the employee.

  • Job Responsibilities: Do the responsibilities of the position require attendance at the regular work place on a continuing basis? What will be the impact of the physical absence on customers and other employees?

  • Employee Capabilities: Is the employee capable of self-management and self-motivation. Does he/she have the requisite organization and time-management skills to succeed? Is he/she a good performer?

  • Home Environment: Will the employee have the home environment required to be productive, including a dedicated workspace and minimal interruptions to work routine by other family members?

General Employment Conditions.

Telecommuting employment conditions and costs are usually a shared employer/employee contract. Ezenet would provide the home hardware and software required and the employee would provide a safe, secure and insured home office.
