The moon
The Moon is perhaps the most majestic body in space. It has long been the object of man's interest. A mere 232,343 Miles (373,919 Km) from the Earth, it is the closest object in space. On July 16, 1969 the Apollo 11 spacecraft began it’s journey to this heavenly body. On July 20,1969, just 4 days later Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on its soil. His words as he made his first step, "One small step for (a) man, one giant leap for man kind", have become a significant part of the history of our Earth. The Moon is a satellite of the planet Earth, it has 1/6 the gravity of the planet Earth and just 1/4 it’s diameter. The Moon has no atmosphere. The craters you see are the result of millions of years of impact with meteorites. The rotational speed of the Moon is so precise that we do not see it’s dark side. Figures 2 and 3 shown below indicate various named location on the Moon. Figure 3 shows a view of the far side of the Moon as taken from the Apollo spacecraft.
