Client Buttons
Chat
Displays the chat dialog currently in progress. The list on
the left (if any) shows the rooms on the server. If the server
has a large number of rooms you will need to enter /list to
update this list. The room you are currently in is displayed
as bold. You can switch rooms by double-clicking on one. The
center area shows the messages you have sent and received.
The current topic for this room, if any, is shown in the title
bar. The right list displays people currently in this chat
room. Your nick is displayed as bold. If you select one or
more names from the list then your messages (and sounds) will
only go to those people. There are two special characters
that preceed some names: @ indicates an operator that issue
commands to control the room. + indicates a user with "voice",
only users with voice can speak in a moderated room. At the
bottom is the input line. You can send a message by typing
it on this line. A few basic commands you can enter are: /nick
newname Change your nickname
/join #newroom Create a new room or join an
existing room
/action message Sends an action (red) message
/whois nick Shows you information about this nickname
/topic new topic Changes the topic (if allowed)
/list Updates the room list
/quit Leave the chat and disconnect from the server
/sound sound message Sends a sound and a message
The sound will only be heard by others using
the java client. Some common sounds are: bell, laugh, gong,
moo, crash, flush, knock and whistle.
Rooms
Displays all the rooms that are currently available. The current
topic for the room (if any), and the number of users in the
room, are also shown. To join one of these rooms (and leave
the one you are in), just double-click on it. If the room
list is not displayed it is because there are a large number
of rooms on the server. To display the list enter /list. You
can also filter the room list using /list filter. For example:
/list *teen* will show only rooms with teen in the name.
Session
Displays your current session settings. Allows you to change
most of your settings even after your session has begun. Note
that you cannot change your email information once you have
signed on.
Float
Removes the Java applet from the html page, and places it
in a seperate window. This is useful if you want to use your
browser to view other pages while you chat. When the Java
Client is "floating", the button toggles its meaning and contains
the word "Embed". If it is pressed while in this state, it
causes the Java applet to be placed back into the page from
which it came, or closed if you are not displaying that page.
